Severe Storm Hits Linton: Building Collapse, Power Outages, and Search for Trapped Resident

LINTON, IN — A violent high-wind storm tore through Linton on Sunday evening, leaving a path of destruction that includes a building collapse in the downtown area and widespread power outages.

Search and Rescue Operations

Emergency responders are currently on high alert following reports of multiple buildings sustaining heavy damage. Most critically, teams are working to confirm and respond to reports of at least one person trapped by debris following a structural failure. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

Downtown Damage & Power Outages

The storm’s intensity caused a partial building collapse in the downtown district, showering streets with brick and timber. In addition to structural damage:

  • Power Outages: Residents on the Northeast side of Linton are currently without power.
  • Blown Transformer: The outage was triggered by a transformer blowing during the peak of the storm.
  • Hazardous Conditions: Multiple power lines are down across various parts of the city, creating significant electrocution risks.

City of Linton: Public Safety Notice

The City of Linton has issued an urgent advisory to all residents:

"Due to the severe storm that moved through our area, there are multiple downed power lines across town and a partial building collapse in the downtown area. For everyone’s safety, please avoid traveling into town and stay clear of downtown until further notice. Emergency responders and utility crews need the roads kept clear so they can work safely and restore conditions as quickly as possible."

Residents are urged to shelter in place and stay away from windows as the weather system continues to move through the region.
